Description 15'x11' watercolor; The church is located in the oldest part of the city of Rio de Janeiro. A legend originated devotion to this saint: terrified by the invasion of Moors to the Iberian Peninsula, nuns from a Portuguese convent decided to escape and hid an image of Our Lady of Lapa in a grotto. Years later, a mute shepherdess found the image and spoke again. Our Lady of Lapa became protector of peddlers. In downtown Rio, peddlers would gather at a small public oratorium to pray. In 1747, merchants organized a fraternity to build the Baroque and Rococo style church on wood. It was completed on 1757 and completely redecorate in 1879. A skylight is over the altar.
